NEW DELHI: P. Pardha Saradhi is a Professor in Environmental Studies at University of Delhi. After attaining stature of first team in the world to successfully develop transgenic Indian mustard genotypes through genetic transformation, his team was also successful in developing other transgenic crop plants, viz. chickpea, sorghum, tomato and rice, with enhanced tolerance to salt, water and temperature stresses. The Citizen’s INDRA SHEKHAR SINGH speaks to the professor on a host of issues:

GM-Free Karnataka and the Karnataka Alliance for Safe Food have announced a 'Sasive Satyagraha' event in Bangalore on October 2, 2016, to be held at the Gandhi Statue at Anand Rao Circle, Bangalore from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. This is primarily a citizens' awareness and call-to-action campaign to protest against the approval of the commercial release of genetically modified varieties of mustard (GM Mustard) in the country.

The way the government is going about the whole issue has raised several doubts over its intent. Civil society and some scientists argue that GM Mustard does not have higher yields than the desi non-GM variety. What is significant is that the NDA government has chosen to sideline the four reports which came out against the GM technology in edible crops viz., the Jairam Ramesh Report of February 2010, the ‘Sopory Committee Report’ (August 2012), the ‘Parliamentary Standing Committee’ Report (August 2012), and the ‘Technical Expert Committee Final Report’ (July 2013)

नयी दिल्ली, (भाषा): देश के कई किसान संगठनों ने जीएम सरसों की खेती को मंजूरी देने के प्रस्ताव का विरोध करते हुए इसके खिलाफ दो अक्तूबर, गांधी जयंती से आंदोलन शुरू करने की चेतावनी दी है। इन संगठनों ने सरकार से मांग की है कि जीएम सरसों पर जारी विशेषज्ञ समिति की रिपोर्ट पर सार्वजनिक टिप्पणी के लिए अधिक समय दिया जाये और कोई निर्णय जल्दबाजी में नहीं लिया जाए।

देश के कई किसान संगठनों ने जीएम सरसों की खेती को मंजूरी देने के प्रस्ताव का विरोध करते हुए इसके खिलाफ दो अक्तूबर, गांधी जयंती से आंदोलन शुरू करने की चेतावनी दी है। इन संगठनों ने सरकार से मांग की है कि जीएम सरसों पर जारी विशेषज्ञ समिति की रिपोर्ट पर सार्वजनिक टिप्पणी के लिए अधिक समय दिया जाए और कोई निर्णय जल्दबाजी में नहीं लिया जाए। भारतीय किसान यूनियन (टिकैत) के प्रवक्ता धर्मेन्द्र मलिक ने कहा, ‘हम जीएम सरसों समेत सभी प्रकार की जीएम फसलों का विरोध करते हैं। जीएम सरसों के विरोध में लखनऊ में दो अक्तूबर से किसान सत्याग्रह किया जाएगा।’ मलिक ने यह भी कहा कि जीएम सरसों पर जारी रिपोर्ट को लेकर सार्वजनिक प्रतिक्रिया के लिये कम से कम 120 दिन का समय दिया जाना चाहिए।

KOZHIKODE: The organic farmers and organisations in Kerala are joining a nationwide protest against the Centre’s bid to approve genetically-modified (GM) mustard. On October 2, they will organise protests in 15 different areas of the state and agriculture minister V.S. Sunil Kumar will join them in Thrissur, said the office-bearers of Coalition for GM-free India.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Now with the state cabinet nod against the entry of genetically modified (GM) food crops, Kerala government is set to write to the Centre expressing its concern against the Genetic Engineering Approval Committee (GEAC) plan to approve GM mustard. This comes in the wake of stiff opposition by a section of scientists, activists and public outcry against GM food crop as it poses a serious health hazard.
