Non-government organisations on Thursday wrote to Union Environment Minister Anil Dave demanding release of complete biosafety data on the Genetically Modified (GM) mustard. They also sought four months time to comment on the GM oilseed. “We urge you to extend the public feedback time to 120 days, to get the regulators to put out the full biosafety dossier in the public domain for independent scientific scrutiny as has been done with other GMOs in the past,” said the NGOs in a letter to Dave.
Don’t allow GM mustard: Anbumani
PMK youth wing leader Anbumani Ramadoss has urged Prime Minister Modi not to give approval for GM mustard cultivation in India. In a letter to Mr. Modi, which he released to the media here, Mr. Anbumani said since mustard was consumed widely, its Bt variant should not be approved at all.
GM Crops: Hotbed Of Activism
Field trials for GM mustard have been conducted extensively in India. And an official committee has described the ‘home-grown’ GM mustard seed as safe for consumption and invited public comments till the first week of October. But Vandana Shiva is not apologetic about her beliefs. For example, she is convinced that the so-called Green Revolution in India is a myth and that crop yields were often better in the era before the Green Revolution. “Mustard is central to India’s food culture. The technical expert committee of the Supreme Court has clearly recommended that there should be no introduction of GMOs in some crops because of risks of contamination,” is her refrain. How credible her claims are is something that science and objective research can determine.

Prominent civil society members Aruna Roy, Medha Patkar and Prashant Bhushan today urged the government not to approve the release of GM mustard citing "non-scientific, opaque and deceptive" processes adopted by country's biotech regulator in studying it.
