The Genetic Engineering Appraisal Committee (GEAC) in India met on August 11 this year to review a safety report by its sub-committee discussing genetically modified (GM) mustard crops and the possibility of introducing them to Indian soil. The Dhara Mustard Hybrid-11 or DMH-11 is indigenously developed and, if implemented, would be the second GM crop to gain free approval for cultivation in the country. The GEAC has not granted full approval yet and instead was soliciting comment, feedback, and suggestions. The last day for submissions was October 5. With the deadline behind us, farmers, activists, and corporations alike now await a final decision.

The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) is inundated with hundreds of faxes and emails requesting Narendra Modi to step in and stop a pending approval to the controversial genetically modified (GM) Mustard. The Genetic Engineering Appraisal Committee (GEAC) under the Ministry of Environment had set October 5, 2016, as the last day to receive public feedback on this controversial crop. Only a month’s time was allocated for the public feedback.

On the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti last Sunday, people in huge groups came together to celebrate ‘Jashn-e-Sarson’ at Dilli Haat, INA. An initiative of the Tourism and Art and Culture Language departments of the Delhi government, the event was aimed at raising awareness by collecting feedback about genetically modified mustard (GM mustard) which might soon be approved by the central government.
