Green signal by “science” to genetically Modified mustard

September 07, 2016 07:15 AM

Bhavdeep Kang, NOW, we have “science” touting GM (genetically modified) foods as safe. A “scientific consensus” has emerged across the world that GM foods are “generally safe” to eat. Several studies have found that GM foods may in fact hurt human health, but they are dismissed out of hand. Studies alleging the safety of GM get far more purchase than those that raise the red flag.

After all, approval of GM foods will yield enormous profits for seed companies which have developed GM seeds.

GM Mustard: Civil society groups calls for scientific scrutiny

September 06, 2016 08:59 PM

NEW DELHI: Civil society groups Tuesday raised serious concerns over environment ministry subcommittee report giving go ahead to GM Mustard, saying the health and environment assessment report is not sufficient to reach at a conclusion as details of the study protocols or data generated has not been put in public domain for independent scientific scrutiny.

The Alliance for Sustainable & Holistic Agriculture (ASHA) wrote a letter to Environment Minister Anil Madhav Dave and ministry’s genetic approval committee head, saying the decision was taken in hurry after two meetings in 15 days' time, with the third meeting on August 11.

GEAC undertook 'meaningless' exercise: Activists on GM mustard

Genetic Engineering Appraisal Committee (GEAC) had constituted a sub-committee of scientific experts to examine the biosafety data on GM mustard. After the committee examined it, the report was placed on the Environment Ministry's website yesterday inviting comments from stakeholders within a period of 30 days before the biotech regulator took a decision.

Activists want full bio-safety data on GM mustard in public domain

September 06, 2016 12:00 AM

NEW DELHI, Even as genetically-modified mustard came a step closer to becoming the first food crop in India to be approved for commercial production after a panel of scientists said it poses no risk to humans, civil society organisations have demanded that the Centre put up the full bio-safety data — and not just the assessment report — on the crop in the public domain to make the feedback process meaningful and scientific.

The oilseed does not raise any public health or safety concerns on human beings and animals with respect to overall nutritional characteristics, the panel said in a document posted on the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Changes website. It is highly unlikely to invade natural ecosystems and poses a negligible risk to biodiversity and agriculture productivity, it said. The oilseed has been developed by the University of Delhi since 2003.

AAP to ask states to oppose GM crops

September 02, 2016 12:00 AM

New Delhi: Aam Aadmi Party, which has expressed its opposition to genetically modified (GM) crops, on Thursday said that it would make a coalition of likeminded states to build pressure on the Centre to withdraw its support to GM crops.

Since there is very little agricultural activity in Delhi, AAP seems to have taken this stand on GM crops with focus on Punjab, where it is contesting elections in 2017.
